Founder's Story
The journey behind The Skin Academy
Born and bred in the Eastern Cape, I grew up between Butterworth and Umtata, with a bright childhood filled with serenity and less buzz. I matriculated from Butterworth High School in 2017.
My first year in varsity was the biggest eye-opening experience, showing me just how big the world can be. In 2018, I studied for a Diploma in Somatology at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. This course was so packed in terms of the amount of work, the modules, and how demanding it was in general. But what attracted me the most was the order and discipline the course had.
"In a campus full of exploration and diversity, we looked uniform. Our faces were always done, our hair neatly tied up in a bun, our nails trimmed and manicured, and we wore our uniforms every single day."
I started working in 2019 with Simo Sendalo Mobile Spa as a freelance therapist. During my holidays, I also worked at Esteem Aesthetics, where I gained valuable experience and insight into what the beauty industry was like in Umtata.
In 2021, I secured my internship hours with Deluxe Laser and Spa. Later that same year, they offered me a part-time weekend position as Front of House. Soon after, they gave me my first official permanent job before I had even graduated!
I would like to add that all of these opportunities came from the people around me, people I met who recognized how eager I was to learn. I made sure to train in every spa and clinic I worked in, always leaving with a new skill, as I couldn't afford to do another year of advanced studies. I ended up qualified in almost all of them.
"All of these opportunities came from the people around me, people I met who recognized how eager I was to learn."
I graduated in 2022, already employed full-time by Deluxe.
In 2023, I explored the cruise ship route by training with Steiner, now known as LWA. Unfortunately, I never ended up boarding a ship after completing the training, and that took a toll on me because the entire process was emotionally draining and financially demanding.
Later in 2023, I returned to the hospitality industry and worked at Cayenne Spa in Pepperclub Hotel. It was a fast-paced environment with long hours and greater responsibility. The resilience I developed there showed me just how much of a hard worker I really am.
In 2024, I secured a position at Dis-Chem's instore Beauty Salon. That job alone showed me how complex the beauty industry really is, and it placed me in a much larger and more involved environment. I was the only therapist working alongside two nail technicians and the entire cosmetics department.
This experience helped me learn about the skincare brands commonly found in pharmacies, so when recommending products to an ordinary girl like me, I know exactly what is available and where to find it. It was another big eye-opener. I knew I was good at what I did, but I also realised that retail wasn't where I wanted my career to end.
Throughout all of these opportunities, Simo Sendalo Mobile Spa was always right behind me. I made such an impression through my leadership, reliability, and five-star client care that I became the go-to therapist time and time again.
"I was exposed to some of the best technology and the most advanced training available. Little did I know that seed would go on to change my life."
My last position was at The Skin Firm, which offered a more aesthetically driven environment. It became a beautiful introduction to entrepreneurship. I had the opportunity to work alongside successful businessmen and women who planted a seed in my mind. I was exposed to some of the best technology and the most advanced training available. Little did I know that seed would go on to change my life.
Throughout my journey, I have met and positively changed many people's lives, especially when it comes to their confidence. This industry is very complex, but it requires you to be the simplest version of yourself, to make every client feel comfortable and to understand that you both teach and learn from everyone who walks through your doors.
